Overview — two novels, two lecturers, one problem

✅ Settled — the August 2026 paper confirms the new syllabus, and the two halves have swapped ends

The older photographed papers examined For Whom the Bell Tolls in Q1–20 and The Old Man and the Sea in Q21–40. The newest paper — August 2026, Form A — reverses the order and confirms the change of novel: Of Mice and Men now opens the paper (Q1–20, signed Dr. Dasouki) and For Whom the Bell Tolls closes it (Q21–40, signed Prof. Iman Lababidi).

Question numbersOn the older papersOn the AUGUST 2026 paper
Q1–20For Whom the Bell Tolls — Prof. ImanOf Mice and Men — Dr. Dasouki
Q21–40The Old Man and the Sea — now deadFor Whom the Bell Tolls — Prof. Iman

What this means. Both halves are live. Steinbeck is no longer a half with no evidence — there are now twenty real questions showing exactly how Dr. Dasouki examines Of Mice and Men. Hemingway is still the most predictable material in your degree, but expect it at the end of the paper, in Prof. Iman's format: one long critical sentence broken into ten consecutive blanks, plus vocabulary from the Donne epigraph. Only The Old Man and the Sea is dead material.

Lectures 1–4 — Hemingway, the code hero, the war, and the opening

Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961). He was wounded on the Italian front in 1918 as an ambulance driver — the wound that shapes everything he wrote. He covered the Spanish Civil War as a journalist, published For Whom the Bell Tolls in 1940, won the Nobel Prize in 1954, and died by suicide in 1961.
⚠ The most clearly broken key in the whole bank. One paper asks what Hemingway's writing is known for and keys “long, elaborate descriptions”. That is wrong, and it contradicts the Nobel citation quoted in your own handout. The answer is short, direct sentences and dialogue — the famous iceberg style, in which most of the meaning stays beneath the surface.
The CODE HERO — all seven elements
1. Grace under pressure — the headline phrase
2. Avoidance of self-pity
3. Courageous acceptance of disasters not of one's own making
4. Intellectual and emotional honesty
5. Tenderness for the weak, the vulnerable and the inexperienced
6. Gaiety of spirit rather than gloom or despair
7. Ironic humour about one's predicaments rather than bitterness or tears
Who is a code hero, and who is not. Code heroes: Robert Jordan, Pilar, Anselmo, El Sordo — and among the minor characters, Golz. The antithesis: Massart. The failure: Pablo — a man who was brave and is now a drunk and a traitor.
The Spanish Civil War, 1936–1939. The Republicans (with international volunteers and Soviet support) against Franco's Fascists (with German and Italian support). Jordan is an American professor of Spanish, a volunteer dynamiter with the Republicans, called “the Inglés” by the guerrillas. His predecessor Kashkin is dead before page one — he killed himself rather than be captured, and that fact hangs over Jordan's own ending.
The epigraph and the title. The novel opens with a passage from John Donne: “No man is an island, entire of itself… any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” An epigraph is a quotation at the front of a book announcing its theme. The bell is a memento mori — a reminder of death — and a symbol of human solidarity. The whole novel is an argument that no one's death is anyone else's business alone.
CharacterWho they are
Robert JordanAmerican professor of Spanish, volunteer dynamiter, anti-fascist. “The Inglés.” The code hero.
Anselmo“The old man”, 68. The guide. Thinks killing is a sin and wants civic penance after the war. Lonely.
Pablothe guerrilla leader who was brave and is now a drunk and a traitor. Loves his horses. Steals the detonators.
PilarPablo's woman, about 50, gypsy, masculine, reads palms, and takes command when Pablo fails. Code hero.
Maria“Rabbit.” Raped and her head shaved by the fascists at Valladolid. Feminine, submissive, innocent.
El Sordo“The deaf man”, real name Santiago. Leader of the other band. Dies on the hilltop. Code hero.
Rafaelthe gypsy — “worthless, although his intentions are good.” Suggests blinding Pablo.
Agustínthe sentry, foul-mouthed: “Qué puta es la guerra — war is a bitchery.”
Fernandosuggests imprisoning Pablo (note the contrast with Rafael)
Andrésthe messenger sent to Golz — arrives too late
Golzthe Russian general who orders the bridge blown. Code hero.
Berrendothe fascist lieutenant who prays for the boy he shoots — and who kills Jordan at the end
KashkinJordan's predecessor, dead before page one

Lectures 5–9 — Maria and Pilar, El Sordo's hill, the theft, and the bridge

Pilar's two great set-pieces. First, she tells the story of the massacre in Pablo's village — how the Republicans beat the fascists through a gauntlet and threw them off a cliff — a scene that refuses to let the reader believe either side is clean. Second, she reads Jordan's palm and will not say what she sees. She also tells Maria that what she suffered “did not happen to you” if she does not accept it — the novel's answer to trauma.
El Sordo's hill — the novel's most famous set-piece. El Sordo's band is trapped on a hilltop. He has the men lie in a circle, feigning death, and shoots a bottle of whisky as a decoy, and when the fascists climb up believing them dead they are shot. But the planes come. El Sordo is killed, and his head is cut off as proof. Lieutenant Berrendo, who ordered it, prays for the dead and refuses to look at the heads — Hemingway's insistence that the enemy is also a man.

THE BRIDGEduty and sacrifice — “the Republic is the bridge”
THE BELLmemento mori and solidarity
FOX / WOLFcunning and treachery / loyalty and courage
The theft of the detonators. Pablo steals the exploders and throws them into the gorge, then returns — because, he says, he could not bear the loneliness. It is the most human moment in the book's least admirable character, and it forces Jordan to blow the bridge with a hand grenade and a wire instead.
The ending. Andrés, carrying Jordan's message that the offensive has been betrayed and must be cancelled, is delayed by Republican bureaucracy and arrives too late. The bridge is blown; Anselmo is killed by a fragment of the bridge itself. Retreating, Jordan's horse is hit and falls on him, breaking his left thigh. He refuses to be carried, refuses to be shot by Agustín, and refuses Kashkin's solution — suicide. He sends Maria away with the words “Thou art me now”, and lies on the pine needles waiting, his heart beating against the forest floor, for Lieutenant Berrendo to ride into range.

Lectures 1–5 — the Depression, the characters, Soledad, and the dream

John Steinbeck (1902–1968), Nobel Prize 1962. Of Mice and Men was published in 1937, in the middle of the Great Depression (1929–1939) and the Dust Bowl, when drought and dust storms drove hundreds of thousands of farmers west to California to work as migrant labourers — homeless, landless, moving from ranch to ranch.
The title comes from Robert Burns's poem “To a Mouse”: “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley” — the best-laid plans of mice and men often go wrong. That is the novel in one line.  •  Soledad, the town, is Spanish for “solitude” — the theme is written into the place-name.  •  Steinbeck's own term for the form is a “play-novelette”: a novella written with stage descriptions, so it can be performed as it stands. Six chapters, four days, Thursday to Sunday.
CharacterWho they are, and what they represent
George Miltonsmall, quick, intelligent. His conflict is responsibility versus freedom. The moral conscience of the novel.
Lennie Smallhuge, immensely strong, mentally disabled. His flaw is lack of awareness — natural strength without control. (Note the irony of the surname “Small”.)
Candythe old swamper — a handyman who cleans the bunk house. He has one hand and $350 (a $250 compensation payment plus $100 saved). His fear is uselessness, and his dog's death foreshadows Lennie's.
Crooksthe only black man on the ranch, with a crooked back. Doubly excluded — by race and by disability. He is educated, and owns books. His dream is simply equality.
Curleythe boss's son, an ex-boxer, small and aggressive. Toxic masculinity and a fragile ego.
Curley's wifenever named — which is itself the point. She had a Hollywood dream. Read as Eve: the temptress, the destroyer of Paradise.
Slimthe jerkline skinner — a mule driver — and “the prince of the ranch”. Ideal leadership: his word settles everything.
Carlsonblunt and unfeeling. Shoots Candy's dog, and owns the Luger that kills Lennie.
Aunt ClaraLennie's dead guardian, who returns in Chapter 6 as his guilty conscience
The dream, and its numbers. A farm of ten acres costing $600, where they will “live off the fatta the lan'” and Lennie will tend the rabbits. Monthly wages are $50. The dream only becomes briefly real when Candy offers his $350 — and that is the moment it is doomed, because the moment a dream becomes possible in Steinbeck, it is about to be destroyed.
Chapters 1–2. The novel opens by a pool on the Salinas River — and it will end in the same place, a perfect circle. Lennie is carrying a dead mouse in his pocket to stroke; George throws it away. Lennie has just cost them their last job at Weed, where he grabbed a girl's dress and would not let go. George makes him promise: if anything goes wrong, come back to this place and hide in the brush.

Lectures 6–10 — Candy's dog, Crooks' room, the barn, and the killing

Candy's dog — the novel's central engine. Carlson insists the old dog is useless and stinking and should be shot; Candy resists, then gives way, and lies on his bunk facing the wall while the shot comes from outside. Afterwards he says the sentence that explains the whole ending: “I ought to have shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to have let no stranger shoot my dog.” Everything that happens to Lennie in Chapter 6 is George applying that lesson.
Crooks' room (Chapter 4). Lennie wanders in on a Saturday night when everyone else is in town. Crooks is at first cruel to him — he torments him with the idea that George might never come back, purely because for once he has power over someone. Then Candy arrives, and the dream becomes real enough that even Crooks asks to join. And then Curley's wife comes in and destroys it in one sentence: she reminds Crooks that she could have him lynched with a word. He withdraws his request immediately.
Why the novel is about loneliness above all. Crooks: “A guy needs somebody — to be near him… A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody.” Curley's wife: “I get lonely.” Candy has only a dog, and then not even that. And George's answer to all of it: “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world… With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.”
The barn (Chapter 5). Lennie has accidentally killed his puppy by stroking it too hard, and is hiding it. Curley's wife finds him, and — lonely herself — tells him her Hollywood dream and lets him stroke her hair. He will not let go; she screams; he panics and shakes her, breaking her neck. The chain is exact and deliberate: mouse → puppy → woman, each larger than the last, each killed by the same tenderness.
The ending. Lennie goes to the pool, exactly as George told him in Chapter 1. He hallucinates Aunt Clara and a giant rabbit, both scolding him. George arrives, having taken Carlson's Luger. He tells Lennie the story of the farm one last time — “Look acrost the river, Lennie, an' I'll tell you so you can almost see it” — and shoots him in the back of the head while Lennie is happy. It is Candy's lesson: he will not let a stranger do it. Carlson's last line closes the book: “Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?” — nobody on the ranch understands what has happened.

How the two novels speak to each other

The comparison she may ask you to draw

Both novels are short, compressed and built on a single doomed plan: three days and a bridge; four days and a farm. Both are written in a stripped, plain style that hides its feeling beneath the surface. Both end with a man shooting someone he loves in order to spare him something worse — Jordan refusing to let his comrades carry him, George refusing to let a stranger shoot Lennie.

And both are about solidarity. Donne's bell tolls for thee because “no man is an island”; George's answer to the loneliest men in the world is “we got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.” One says it in a war, the other on a ranch — but it is the same sentence.

Where to spend your time. Day 1–2: the Hemingway half, filtered to ★★ On 2+ papers — this is the most predictable material in your degree, and it is winnable outright. Day 3–4: the Steinbeck half, unfiltered, because there is no safety net there at all.
