Overview — the shape of the course

Two eras, one movement: from certainty to fragmentation THE VICTORIANS · 1837–1901 Lectures 1–5 Arnold · Tennyson · R. Browning E. B. Browning · C. Rossetti the crisis of faith · the dramatic monologue THE MODERNS · 1901–1945 Lectures 6–9 Pound · H.D. · Williams · Eliot Auden · Brooke · Owen · Douglas · Hardy “Make it new” · the image · the war The keyed answer to his own summary question: from confidence and stability to fragmentation and uncertainty
What the course is. Nine lectures in two halves. The first five cover the Victorian age — its crisis of faith, its five poets and the technique it invented, the dramatic monologue. The last four cover Modernism — what the First World War did to poetry, the Imagist experiment, Auden, and the war poets themselves.

⚠ Two gaps you must know about before you revise

1. Lecture 9 carries a note saying the professor deleted Lecture 7 (Pound and Imagism) and that it is not required. Do not believe it. The newest paper — 12 March 2026 — takes thirteen of its forty questions from exactly that material.
2. There is no Larkin and no Plath lecture in your handouts at all, yet all four papers examine them, and the August 2025 paper gives them seven of its fifty items. Both are reconstructed for you in the Auden & War bank.

Lecture 1 — The Victorian Age & Matthew Arnold

The age. Queen Victoria reigned 1837–1901 — and the handout allows 1832 as a start date too, because of the First Reform Act. It was Britain's golden age: the richest, most powerful country on earth, an empire covering a quarter of the world, “the empire on whose lands the sun never sets”. And beneath that confidence, everything was breaking.

Death of Victoria1901the age ends
The three men who shook the century: Darwin (Origin of Species, 1859) destroyed the argument from design; Marx (Das Kapital, 1867) called religion “the opium of the people”; Freud founded psychoanalysis. Darwin did not disprove God — he removed the scientific reason to believe in one, and the result was doubt and agnosticism, not confident atheism.
Industrial alienation. Manchester grew from 17,000 people in 1760 to over 300,000 by 1850; by 1851 more than half of Britain lived in towns. Factory hours ran 14–16 a day, six days a week. Carlyle called the result the “cash nexus” — human relationships reduced to money transactions. Dickens's Hard Times (1854) shows factory owners treating workers as “hands”.
Matthew Arnold (1822–1888). Son of Dr Thomas Arnold, the famous headmaster of Rugby School. He earned his living as a school inspector for over thirty years, and became Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857. He was a poet, a critic and an essayist — never a dramatist, a novelist or a scientist, and that negative is one of the most repeated exam items in the course.
His two formulas, easy to swap and therefore both asked: culture is “the best that has been thought and said” (from Culture and Anarchy, 1869, where he coined the modern sense of Philistines); and poetry should be “a criticism of life”. His diagnosis: society was losing its moral centre, religion was weakening, so culture must replace religion as guidance.

Lecture 2 — “Dover Beach” المحاضرة ٢: «شاطئ دوفر» the most examined poem

Written around 1851, published 1867. Dover is the closest point between England and France, so the poem looks at Europe — the crisis it describes is Western, not merely British. A man stands at a window on his honeymoon night and calls his wife to admire the moonlit sea. The poem begins with light.
Then he stops looking and starts listening. The pebbles dragged back and flung by the waves make a “grating roar” with a “tremulous cadence slow” that brings in “the eternal note of sadness”. The sound carries him back two and a half thousand years: Sophocles heard it on the Aegean and thought of “the turbid ebb and flow of human misery”. The point is that suffering is universal.
The central metaphor. Faith was once a sea lying round the whole earth “like the folds of a bright girdle furled” — a belt clothing the world and covering its defects. Now it withdraws with a “melancholy, long, withdrawing roar”, leaving “the vast edges drear / And naked shingles of the world.” Note that “Sea” and “Faith” are both capitalised in the text.
The form questions — all askedAnswer
How is it divided?Four verse paragraphs, NOT stanzas — of 14, 6, 8 and 9 lines. The handout says outright: “I might ask you about this in the exam.”
Why paragraphs and not stanzas?because the sections differ in the number and length of lines. Lines of differing length are heterometric; equal lines are isometric.
What form is it?a dramatic monologue — invented by Robert Browning
How many speakers?ONE, addressing his beloved
What is the tone?melancholy and reflective
Is it about war?NO — the handout stresses this twice. The battlefield at the end is a simile.
The only solution left is human: “Ah, love, let us be true / To one another!” — fragile, temporary, human, not divine. And the closing image is the night battle of Epipolae, 413 BC, in which the Athenians were destroyed by the Spartans in a darkness so confusing that neither side could tell friend from foe: “a darkling plain / Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, / Where ignorant armies clash by night.” The poem ends in darkness.

Lecture 3 — Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Tennyson (1809–1892) is the chief representative of Victorian poetry. Everything examinable about him hangs on two facts: the laureateship and the death of Arthur Hallam.
The laureateship. Tennyson became Poet Laureate in 1850, succeeding William Wordsworth, and held it for forty-two years until his death. Robert Southey is the planted decoy — he really was laureate, but before Wordsworth, not after. Read which end of the sentence is blank.
Arthur Hallam was Tennyson's closest friend at Cambridge and engaged to his sister. He died suddenly in 1833. Tennyson stopped publishing poetry for ten years — he did not stop writing — and spent seventeen years composing the long elegy In Memoriam A.H.H., published 1850, his greatest and longest poem and one of the great elegies in English.

⚠ The two Arthurs — the course's most dangerous pair of names

ARTHUR HALLAM → Tennyson's friend → In Memoriam and “Break, break, break”.
ARTHUR HUGH CLOUGH → Arnold's friend → “Thyrsis”.
One printed paper keys In Memoriam to Matthew Arnold. That is wrong. It is Tennyson's.

the same grief as In Memoriam, compressed. Everything in the world moves and sounds and arrives — a fisherman's boy shouting, a sailor lad singing, stately ships reaching harbour — and the speaker alone cannot even say what he feels. “O for the touch of a vanish'd hand, / And the sound of a voice that is still!” The waves come back; the dead do not. Tears, Idle Tearsa lyric on irrecoverable time, with the refrain “the days that are no more”, ending “O Death in Life, the days that are no more!”blank verse lyric

Lecture 4 — Robert Browning

Browning (1812–1889), born in Camberwell, died in Venice. He had almost no formal education after fourteen and was largely self-taught, chiefly in Greek and Latin. In his own lifetime he was less famous than his wife; today he is one of the major Victorian poets.
His one great contribution: the DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE.
Soliloquy = speaking alone, to yourself. Dramatic monologue = speaking to somebody who is present and does not reply. Its defining feature is that the speaker reveals himself without meaning to — “an indirect revelation of his temperament and personality”, usually at a critical moment.
Others who used it: Tennyson (“Ulysses”), Kipling, Eliot (“Prufrock”), Robert Frost — and Arnold in “Dover Beach”.

“My Last Duchess” (1842) — the model of the technique «

A Duke shows a visitor a portrait behind a curtain that only he is allowed to draw. The visitor is an envoy from a Count whose daughter the Duke intends to marry; they have just finished negotiating the dowry. In the second line the Duke gives himself away — “Looking as if she were alive” — and does not notice.
His complaint, heard plainly, is astonishing: she was kind to everybody. She blushed at the painter's compliment, thanked the fool who broke off a bough of cherries for her, enjoyed riding a white mule round the terrace, and smiled at the Duke — but smiled at everyone else the same way. She did not rank his “nine-hundred-years-old name” above anybody else's gift. Could he not have told her? No: that would be “to stoop”, and “I choose / Never to stoop.” So — “This grew; I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together.”
Browning never tells us what the commands were, and does not need to. On the way downstairs the Duke points out a bronze of Neptune taming a sea-horse, cast for him alone — the god who tames nature, in the house of the man who tames wives. Both artists named, Fra Pandolf and Claus of Innsbruck, are fictional. The poem is 56 lines in heroic couplets.
Home-Thoughts, From Abroadwritten homesick in Italy. “Oh, to be in England / Now that APRIL'S there” — the word and the poet are both asked. The decoy poem is “When Spring Comes Back to England” by Alfred Noyes (1880–1958), “an echo of Browning's poem”.
Meeting at Night /
Parting at Morning
a pair, the second continuing the first. It never uses the word love: “he communicates experience, not information.” The imagery works on three senses — sight (grey sea, yellow half-moon, the blue spurt of a lighted match), smell (the warm sea-scented beach), hearing (the tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch, the two hearts beating).

Lecture 5 — Elizabeth Barrett Browning & Christina Rossetti

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861). Educated at home; she read the Greek and Latin authors and Dante in the original as a teenager. She met Robert in May 1845, married secretly and eloped to Italy in August 1846, settling in Florence, chiefly for her health. She was six years older than him and an invalid. On Wordsworth's death in 1850 she was a serious contender for the laureateship — but it went to Tennyson.
Sonnet 43 — “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” From Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850) — “the Portuguese” was Robert's pet name for her. It is a Petrarchan sonnet, rhyming ABBAABBACDCDCD, in iambic pentameter, with the volta at line 9. “I love thee” is repeated eight times. Four abstract nouns are capitalised — Being, Grace, Right, Praise. The last line: “I shall but love thee better after death.”
Christina Rossetti (1830–1894). Her brother was the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti — note that “Dante Rossetti” is planted as a decoy on the In Memoriam question. Her first book, Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862), appeared when she was thirty-one; Barrett Browning died two months later, and Rossetti was hailed as her natural successor as “female laureate”.
Up-Hillan allegory of life and death in question-and-answer form: the road = life's difficult journey · the inn = death or heaven · the beds = rest and salvation. Four quatrains, sixteen lines, no quotation marks — so it may be two speakers or one internal self-questioning. The beds also point to Rossetti's doctrine of “soul sleep”.
Winter: My Secretoriginally titled “Nonsense”. A dramatic monologue addressed to an unnamed “you”, structured by the seasons: winter (refusal — too cold) → spring (distrust — March's dust, April's showers, May's frost) → summer (perhaps). And there may be no secret at all: “Suppose there is no secret after all, / But only just my fun.”
Remembera Petrarchan sonnet that reverses its own request. The octave asks to be remembered; the sestet, from the volta at line 9, concludes: “Better by far you should forget and smile / Than that you should remember and be sad.”

Lecture 6 — Modernism

Twenty-one million people died in the First World War (1914–1918); forty-four million in the Second (1939–1945). Empires broke into new countries. And the Victorian belief that history was moving forward toward improvement collapsed. Poets stopped trying to be beautiful and started trying to be new.

The three famous self-descriptions, and who owns each:
“MAKE IT NEW” → Ezra Pound (printed in capitals in the handout).
“I am the last Romantic, and the first Modernist” → W. B. Yeats, who lived in a solitary tower called Thoor Ballylee.
“Classicist in literature, royalist in politics, Anglo-Catholic in religion” → T. S. Eliot.
And the two datings: Virginia Woolf — December 1910, when “human nature changed”; D. H. Lawrence — 1915, “the old world ended” (in his novel Kangaroo). Thomas Hardy called it “the breaking of nations”.
The six features of Modernist poetry
1. “Make it new” — experimentation; a complete break from traditional rhyme, metre and Victorian sentimentality; free verse
2. Fragmentation and juxtaposition — jumping between images, times and voices like a collage
3. The “iceberg” principle — allusiveness and difficulty; dense references to myth, history and other literatures
4. Irony and impersonality — Eliot's term: the poem should exist apart from the poet's feelings
5. Alienation and disillusionment — the “hero” is a flawed, confused individual in a modern city
6. Focus on the inner mind — the stream of consciousness
What they shared with the Romantics — the harder question. Both saw themselves as detached from and critical of society. Both escaped to distant idealised worlds: Coleridge to Xanadu, Tennyson to Lotus-land, Pound to Cathay (old China), Yeats to Byzantium, Eliot to Himavant. And the Romantic motifs of solitude and loneliness persist in the twentieth-century condition of alienation. The difference: the Romantics retreated to the countryside; the Modernists confronted the present and focused on the urban.

Lecture 7 — Pound, Imagism and Williams المحاضرة ٧: باوند والتصويرية وويليامز dropped — but 13 of 40 on the newest paper

Ezra Pound (1885–1972) came from America to London to work as secretary to W. B. Yeats, and acted as a literary agent for the then-unknown Eliot. He edited The Waste Land, which Eliot dedicated to him as il miglior fabbro — “the better craftsman”. He is the midwife of Modernism, not its father. He outlived all his contemporaries, embraced Mussolini's fascism, and spent years in a hospital for the criminally insane in Washington.

⚠ The most dangerous double on the course: who founded Imagism?

THE INVENTOR IS H.D. — Hilda Doolittle. The handout is explicit: “Hilda Doolittle was the first woman to invent a new technique of poetry which is called Imagism… the real master, in fact, is H.D.”
THE PUBLICIST IS POUND — “Pound was the publicist, rather than the inventor, of Imagist doctrines.”
If both names are offered, match the verb: FOUNDED / INVENTED / INITIATED → H.D. · LED / PROMOTED / WAS INSTRUMENTAL → POUND. If only one is offered, take it.

Imagism: 1912–1917 — five years, “less than a decade”. Founded in London coffee-shops by Pound, H.D. and Richard Aldington. The three rules were published in Poetry magazine in March 1913 in an article called “Imagisme” by F. S. Flint and Pound:
1. Direct treatment of the “thing”, whether objective or subjective
2. Absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation
3. As regards rhythm: compose in the sequence of the musical phrase, not of a metronome
Pound's own summary: “Objective — no slither; direct — no excessive use of adjectives.” Imagists rejected adjectives. Pound left the movement for Vorticism in 1914.
PoemThe facts he asks
In a Station of the Metro
(experience 1912, published 1913)
The complete text: “The apparition of these faces in the crowd; / Petals on a wet, black bough.”
TWO lines, FOURTEEN words — eight in the first, six in the second, mirroring the octave and sestet of a Petrarchan sonnet. No verb. It is NOT a couplet and NOT a sonnet. Written in the Japanese haiku style; Pound called it a “hokku-like sentence”. The setting is the Paris Metro at La Concorde. The blanks he sets: the noun PETALS, the adjective BLACK. Pound's definition of the image: “that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time.”
The Red Wheelbarrow
(1923) — W. C. Williams
EIGHT lines, SIXTEEN words, ONE sentence. “so much depends / upon // a red wheel / barrow // glazed with rain / water // beside the white / chickens.” What depends on it? Human life — twice over: the objects give physical sustenance, and the red against the white, the shiny glaze against the soft feathers, give aesthetic pleasure that the objects' usefulness does not require. Both the first line and the last word have been blanked on different papers.
William Carlos Williams (1883–1963): born New Jersey, educated in Geneva, studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and in Leipzig, and practised as a physician. He began as an Imagist and later founded Objectivism, “in which form and meaning are single and identical”.  •  Pound's Cathay is his book of translations from Chinese poetry — “Cathay” is the old European name for China.

Dr. Ahmad Al-Shawi

Auden (1907–1973), born in York, raised in Birmingham, educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he formed the “Auden Group” with Stephen Spender and Christopher Isherwood. He is a second-generation Modernist — the first generation being Eliot, Yeats and Pound.
His life divides at 1939. The British period (1930s): socialism, Freudian psychoanalysis, political instability, the rise of fascism; he served in the Spanish Civil War. He emigrated to the USA in 1939 and became a citizen in 1940 — after which his central preoccupation became Christianity and Anglo-Catholic theology. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 for The Age of Anxiety, and died in Vienna, Austria.

“The Unknown Citizen” — the state writes an obituary «

The poem is a government report. Its sources are the Bureau of Statistics, his Union, the Social Psychology workers, the Press, Producers Research, his Health-card, the Eugenist and his children's teachers — and every one of them approves of him. He worked at Fudge Motors Inc. (a joke on Ford), never got fired, paid his dues, bought a paper daily, liked a drink, was fully insured, owned a phonograph, a radio, a car and a Frigidaire, held “the proper opinions for the time of year”, and produced five children.
There is exactly one thing the report does not contain: his name. The title mocks the Unknown Soldier, whose body was destroyed; here it is the soul that has been destroyed. In the old sense a “saint” served God and had to defy the world — and so found his soul; the modern saint serves “the Greater Community” by doing everything he is told — and so loses it. The last two lines: “Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: / Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard.”

“Musée des Beaux Arts” — the indifference of the world «متحف الفنون الجميلة»

Auden visited the museum in Brussels in 1938. The poem alludes to three paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder: The Census at Bethlehem (lines 5–8), The Massacre of the Innocents (10–13) and Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (14–21) — the last was Brueghel's only mythological subject. The sequence runs from the birth of Christ, to Herod's slaughter, to a myth: events of decreasing personal significance to a modern viewer.
The theme is the apathy with which humans view individual suffering: “About suffering they were never wrong, / The Old Masters… how it takes place / While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along.” The ploughman “may have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, / But for him it was not an important failure”, and the expensive delicate ship “had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.” Form: free verse with an irregular rhyme scheme.
The myth: Daedalus made wings of feathers and wax to escape Crete and warned his son Icarus to fly neither too low (the sea would soak them) nor too high (the sun would melt them). Icarus flew too high — “the victim of vanity and foolhardiness”.
Two more Auden poems in the handout. “The Labyrinth”: Anthropos apteros — “wingless man” in Greek — is lost in a maze, tries philosophy, theology, mathematics and aesthetics in turn, and finally “looked up and wished he were a bird”. “The Fall of Rome” (1947): a civilisation collapsing not in one epic battle but through an accumulation of quiet, systemic breakdowns — abandoned trains, tax agents chasing defaulters through sewers, and a clerk writing I DO NOT LIKE MY WORK on a pink official form while Caesar's double-bed stays warm. Written after the Second World War, it is a warning that all superpowers rot from the inside out.

The death table — learn it once and four different questions are answered

PoetHow and when
Wilfred Owen (1893–1918)Killed in action, 1918 — one week before the Armistice. Returned to the Front in 1918.
Rupert Brooke (1887–1915)Died of blood poisoning (sepsis) at Scyros, April 1915, aged 27, on his way to the Dardanelles. He never reached battle.
Isaac RosenbergKilled 1918
Keith Douglas (1920–1944)Killed in Normandy, 1944 — a different war
Siegfried Sassoon (1886–1967)Survived.

One printed key names Brooke as the poet who died shortly before the Armistice. That is wrong: it is Owen.

PoetWhat to know
Siegfried SassoonJewish, privileged, Cambridge-educated, an officer who came to attack the generals and sympathise with the “Tommies”. His targets, with their poem titles: churchmen (“They”), the top brass (“The General”), even the women of England (“Glory of Women”). His first war poem was “The Rear-Guard”, written in hospital after he was wounded on the Hindenburg Line in April 1917 — an officer gropes along a tunnel, kicks a sleeping man to wake him, and finds a corpse ten days dead.
Wilfred OwenMet Sassoon in a psychiatric hospital in Scotland, where Sassoon had been sent shell-shocked; Sassoon encouraged his writing and his growing pacifism. Three poems: “Dulce et Decorum Est” (the title from Horace — “it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country” — quoted in bitter irony; the gas attack; “guttering, choking, drowning”); “Anthem for Doomed Youth” (1917); and “Futility” (“Move him gently into the sun”).
Rupert BrookeFamously beautiful, favoured by Winston Churchill. Wrote FIVE sonnets at the start of the war — Peace, Safety, The Dead, The Dead, The Soldier — published 1915 as 1914, and Other Poems. In the fourteen lines of “The Soldier”, England or English appears six times. Its opening: “If I should die, think only this of me: / That there's some corner of a foreign field / That is for ever ENGLAND.” He knew from Churchill what modern war would be, and wrote nothing of it: the poem is “more an elegy of sacrifice than a poem about modern war”.
Isaac RosenbergThree facts, all of which he examines: Jewish heritage · enlisted because he was poor · depicted soldiers as victims of war machinery. His poem is “Break of Day in the Trenches”, which contrasts a rat's survival with the soldier's death — the rat crosses freely between the German and English lines; the men who cannot are killed.
Keith DouglasThe Second World War. Born Tunbridge Wells, educated at Oxford, an officer in the Tank Corps, served in North Africa and Normandy. “Vergissmeinnicht” = “Forget me not” in German. 24 lines, 6 quatrains. A British tank crew return three weeks later to find the dead German gunner who had hit their tank, and in the gun pit a photograph of his girl signed “Steffi. Vergissmeinnicht.” Closing couplet: “For here the lover and killer are mingled / who had one body and one heart.” His tone is compared to the Metaphysicals — detached and clinical on the surface — and expresses “neither enmity, hate nor triumph, but only pity and shared humanity.”
Thomas Hardy“The Man He Killed”, written twelve years before the First World War. A working man tries to explain why he shot another working man and cannot. He says it was “because he was my foe” — then has to repeat the word “because”, reassure himself three times over, and the sentence collapses into “although”. The truth is that the other man enlisted for the same reason he did: he was out of work and had sold his belongings. The purpose of the poem is “to make us realize more keenly the irrationality of war.”
Hugh MacDiarmidReal name Christopher Murray Grieve (1892–1978), Scottish, wrote in “synthetic Scots”. His poem “In the Children's Hospital” takes its epigraph from Sassoon — “Does it matter? Losing your legs?” — and shows a legless boy made to demonstrate his crutches for a visiting Princess.
A speaker's rule that answers several questions: the poem you are given is almost always anti-war, even when it is written by a soldier — “like many war poems, it is really an anti-war poem.” The one exception is Rupert Brooke, who is always the other half of the pair: Brooke = nationalistic, idealistic, patriotic sacrifice; Owen, Sassoon, Rosenberg = horror, pity, futility.

How the nine lectures fit together

The sentence that holds the course together

Every poem on this syllabus is about something that used to hold and no longer does. For Arnold it is religious faith, withdrawing like a tide. For Tennyson it is a friend, gone and not coming back. For Browning's Duke it is a wife he destroyed for being kind. For Pound and Williams it is the old poetic language itself, thrown out and replaced by the bare image. For Brooke it is a heroic idea of war that lasted eight months. For Owen and Douglas it is the humanity of the man in the opposite trench. For Auden it is the self, dissolved into statistics. And the keyed answer to the examiner's own summary question puts it in six words: the movement of the age is from confidence and stability to fragmentation and uncertainty.

Where to spend your time: “Dover Beach” alone has supplied at least fifteen printed exam items — more than any other single poem on the course. After it, the Imagism block (thirteen of forty on the newest paper), then Browning's dramatic monologue, then the war poets' death table, then Larkin and Plath, which no handout covers.
