Overview — how the course is arranged
⚠ Before anything else — how this examiner builds a paper
Comparing the four photographed papers side by side shows that Dr. Waha does not write new questions. She writes one question and then reuses it with a single word altered — and when that word changes, the correct answer changes with it. Memorising a letter is worthless; memorising the pair is decisive.

She also moves the options: “What is the greatest of evils?” is keyed Poverty when poverty is on the list and None of the above when it is not. And uniquely on this course, two papers sometimes key the same question, with the same options, differently — seven such contradictions exist.
Lecture 1 — Introduction
The opening lecture places the course: two Irish playwrights who both left Ireland — George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950), Dublin to London, and Samuel Beckett (1906–1989), Dublin to Paris. Two plays that both refuse the tidy ending, but for opposite reasons.
Lecture 2 — Realism, Naturalism, and Shaw's life

a reaction against Romanticism; presents ordinary life without idealisation
mid-19th to early 20th century
NATURALISM الطبيعية
realism plus scientific determinism: character is the product of heredity and environment, and cannot simply choose otherwise. A development of realism, not a rival to it.
1865–1940
The two Frenchmen he sets against each other. EUGÈNE SCRIBE (1791–1861) — the well-made play: exposition → complication → development → climax → dénouement, in a logical line that sends the audience home satisfied. This item is on THREE papers. ÉMILE ZOLA (1840–1902) — naturalism and its three principles: faire vrai, faire grand, faire simple — make it true, make it significant, make it simple.
And two derived items: the well-made play is the prototype of the REALIST play; and the realist play replaces the logical ending with A DISCUSSION.
Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) was Norwegian. A Doll's House (1879) was performed in English in Britain in 1889, and that event set Shaw thinking; his essay is “The Quintessence of Ibsenism” (1891). Shaw's own answer to A Doll's House is Candida (1898), where the wife ends by choosing “the weaker of the two” — her husband. His naturalist play is Mrs Warren's Profession (1893), on prostitution as an economic consequence, banned for years by the censor.
Shaw the man — the seminar's territory
Born Dublin 1856, died 1950 — ninety-four years. Nobel Prize 1925. Inherited his love of music from his mother, a trained professional singer; his first paid work at eighteen was as a music critic. A leading figure in the Fabian Society, for which he wrote pamphlets: his socialism is gradualism and pragmatism, not revolution. He regarded the art of ruling as the highest art, and the stage as the best instrument for moral propaganda. His personal conduct was that of a religious man — vegetarian, teetotal, humanitarian — even as he attacked the Church for hypocrisy.
⚠ A False statement she sets: “Only good laws make good society” → FALSE. Shaw's line runs the other way: “we must make the world honest before we can honestly say to our children that honesty is the best policy.” He wanted criminals banished, not imprisoned, and poverty made the one punishable crime. • Note also: the handout says he won the Nobel “when he was 75” — born 1856, he was 69. Trust the year, not the age.
From Latin nihil = nothing. Life has no intrinsic meaning, purpose or value. “God is dead” — The Gay Science (1882), §125, “The Parable of the Madman”. He is describing a cultural event, not making a theological claim: modern rationality has removed the foundation that supported moral values, and nothing has replaced it.
Søren Kierkegaard — the father / first existential philosopher (1813–1855, Danish). Sartre — the slogan.
“Existence precedes essence”: you exist first and define yourself afterwards through your choices; there is no fixed human nature handed to you in advance.
Albert Camus — The Myth of Sisyphus, 1942
The absurd is born of the conflict between man's search for meaning and the universe's silence. Camus rejects both suicide and the leap of faith, and argues for lucid revolt.
The four dates you cannot afford to mix:Turgenev brought nihilism into literature in Fathers and Sons, 1862 (the character Bazarov) · Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground, 1864 · Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus, 1942 · Martin Esslin coined “Theatre of the Absurd” in his book of 1961, analysing Beckett, Ionesco, Genet and Pinter.
⚠ The features of absurdist theatre — and the option that decides the key. Absurd plays lack traditional plot, traditional characterisation and logical structure. If the list contains “logical structure”, the answer to “what do they lack?” is ALL OF THE ABOVE. If it contains “unrealistic setting” instead, the answer drops to BOTH A AND B — because absurd plays deliberately do have unrealistic settings.
Lecture 4 — Beckett and Waiting for Godot
Samuel Beckett (1906–1989), born in Foxrock near Dublin, settled in Paris. He worked as secretary and assistant to James Joyce, whom he met in 1928. He wrote the play in French first — En attendant Godot — and translated it himself, choosing French in order “to write without style”.
★★★ The single highest-yield fact set on the course — she has built at least three separate questions from it: WRITTEN in French 1948 (the handout first says 1947, then corrects itself) · PUBLISHED in France 1952 · PERFORMED in France 1953 · translated 1953–54 · English text published New York 1954, London 1956 · PERFORMED in London 1955.
Beckett's own subtitle: “a tragicomedy in two acts”.
Influence
What they share
Where they differ
JAMES JOYCE
a preoccupation with the limits of LANGUAGE
Joyce believed in words — “all you had to do was rearrange them”. Beckett concluded that “words only offer totally inadequate communication.”
MARCEL PROUST
a preoccupation with the limits of PERCEPTION
Beckett dismisses as worthless Proust's two certainties: involuntary memory and habitual reality. Vladimir's version of the second is “habit is a great deadener.”
Beckett's theatrical trademark is THE INTELLECTUAL TRAMP — “a person with no aim who wanders from one place to another looking for food and a job”, who nonetheless produces flashes of philosophical wisdom. Repetition, cyclic action and incoherence are techniques, not the trademark. • He told his actors to perform it “very simply”, so as “to give confusion shape” — which is why critics value the play for its codification, not its minimalism.
Lecture 5 — Major Barbara: genre and story
Major Barbara was Shaw's thirteenth play: performed 1905, the preface written 1906, published 1907. The handout warns you explicitly that the production and publication dates differ — and she has set both. It is a discussion play (also a comedy of ideas, a problem play): the drama is in the argument, and the ending is a debate, not a resolution.
Character
Who they are
Andrew Undershaft
millionaire cannon manufacturer, Barbara's estranged father. “A Mephistopheles of capitalism”, “a saint with a gospel”. His religion: money and gunpowder — “I am a Millionaire. That is my religion.”
Barbara
Major in the Salvation Army — the Army uses military ranks, uniforms and “the Colors”
Lady Britomart
the estranged aristocratic wife who summons Undershaft to settle money on the children
Adolphus Cusins
professor of Greek, nicknamed “Euripides”; plays the big drum for the Army only because he is in love with Barbara — not a true believer
Stephen · Sarah · Charles Lomax
the son who cannot inherit, and the other engaged couple
Peter Shirley
honest workman sacked for being too old; comes asking for work, ashamed of charity
Snobby Price
a loafer who fakes a conversion for the free bread; claims to have beaten his mother; “like the socialists, I take what's going”
Bill Walker
the violent one; strikes Jenny Hill; tries to buy his conscience back with a sovereign
Rummy Mitchens
invents sins to confess for the bread
Mrs Baines
the Commissioner who accepts the donations
Bodger
a whisky distiller who offers £5,000 if five others give £1,000 each
The three acts in one line each.ACT I, the drawing room at Wilton Crescent: a money problem, Undershaft returns and cannot tell which are his children, and father and daughter strike the bargain — he will visit her shelter if she will visit his cannon works. ACT II, the West Ham shelter: Bill Walker, the fake conversions, and the £5,000 of tainted money that breaks Barbara's faith. ACT III, Perivale St Andrews: the model town, the armourer's faith, Cusins's inheritance, and Barbara's decision.
Lectures 6, 10 & 12 — Act I: the road, the boot, the waiting
The whole set is six words: “A country road. A tree. Evening.” The first line is Estragon struggling with his boot: “Nothing to be done.” Vladimir then applies the same phrase to existence itself — the play's first sentence is already its thesis.
Character
What defines them
VLADIMIR (Didi)
the MIND. The hat. A bad bladder — an allegory of his inability to cope, to forget, or to move on. He remembers, and therefore suffers; he still hopes, and therefore is anxious. He refuses to hear Estragon's dreams — “DON'T TELL ME!” — in both acts.
ESTRAGON (Gogo)
the BODY. The boots. Sore feet; beaten nightly in a ditch by ten men he cannot describe. He forgets everything — by Act II he does not remember Pozzo, Lucky, the tree or the beating. He wants to eat and to sleep.
POZZO
the master. Rope round Lucky's neck and a whip. Two great poetic speeches. Blind in Act II.
LUCKY
the slave. Carries a heavy bag, a stool, a basket and a coat and never puts them down — because he wants to impress Pozzo and be kept. Dumb in Act II.
THE BOY
minds Godot's goats; his brother minds the sheep and is beaten. Never meets Pozzo or Lucky.
GODOT
Never appears. Beckett refused to say what he means: “Godot does not tell you what he wants; he leaves it to you.”
The props carry the symbolism, and she asks them.THE BOOTS = the body, physical suffering, Estragon. THE HAT = the mind, thought, Vladimir — and Lucky can only think with his hat on. Both also stand for “everything external to you” that you blame for your own faults. THE TREE = hope, the cross, the passage of time — four or five leaves in Act II. THE ROPE = bondage and mutual dependency, and it is shorter in Act II.
Lectures 12 & 14 — Pozzo, Lucky, and the end of Act I
Pozzo drives Lucky by a rope and a whip. Vladimir calls the sight “a SCANDAL!” and Estragon adds “A disgrace!” — two words, two speakers, and she has set them. Pozzo announces he is taking Lucky to the fair to sell him, after nearly sixty years of service. Lucky weeps; Estragon goes to wipe his tears and is kicked violently in the shins.
Pozzo's two great speeches — both examined
The tears of the world — “The tears of the world are a CONSTANT QUANTITY. For each one who begins to weep, somewhere else another stops.” The same is true of the laugh.
The fall of night — “Behind this veil of gentleness and peace night is charging and will burst upon us pppfff! like that… just when we least expect it.”It is also foreshadowing: what he describes happens to him personally in Act II, when he wakes up blind. The seminar calls his speech and Lucky's “complementary”.
Lucky's monologue. To make him think, Pozzo must first put his hat on him; to stop him, they knock the hat off and trample it. The tirade begins with a personal God “quaquaqua with white beard… outside time without extension… who loves us dearly WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS FOR REASONS UNKNOWN.” That refrain is the monologue's argument: divine indifference that cannot be explained. And sports and tennis stand for man's attempt to compensate for the loss of love, certainty and purpose — companionship is the intruder in that list.
The Boy always arrives after Pozzo and Lucky have gone — he was afraid of “the whip” and “the roars”. His message, identical in both acts: “Mr Godot told me to tell you he won't come this evening but SURELY TOMORROW.” That word “surely” is what keeps them there for a second act, and would keep them there for a hundredth. Vladimir questions him closely to understand Godot, and makes him promise to say that he has seen them — because to be seen is to exist.
Lectures 16, 18 & 20 — Act II and the ending
What changes in Act II
The tree has four or five leaves — the only objective evidence of change in the whole play. Pozzo is BLIND; Lucky is DUMB. The master who held the rope is now led by the slave, and the rope is shorter. Estragon sleeps twice: Vladimir wakes him the first time and lets him sleep the second — the only development Vladimir undergoes.
The four most quoted lines, and who says each. “They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more” → POZZO. Vladimir echoes it and adds “and a difficult birth” — so if the quotation contains “a difficult birth”, the speaker is VLADIMIR. “The blind have no notion of time” → POZZO, Act II. He also calls his blindness “a form of DEATH”. “Was I sleeping while the others suffered?” → VLADIMIR, the final speech — the play's one moment of self-knowledge, lost immediately. “Habit is a great deadener” → VLADIMIR, immediately after Pozzo and Lucky's final exit.
Both acts end with the same exchange, the speakers swapped: in Act I Vladimir says “Yes, let's go”; in Act II Estragon does. And both times: THEY DO NOT MOVE. The structure is cyclical — “a play where nothing happens, twice” — and non-linear / fragmented. The three registers of language: the tramps' talk is fragmented, Pozzo's speeches are poetic, Lucky's tirade is incoherent.
The seven parts of the preface, in order — she has already asked the first and the last:
1. First Aid to Critics · 2. The Gospel of St Andrew Undershaft · 3. The Salvation Army · 4. Barbara's Return to the Colors · 5. Weaknesses of the Salvation Army · 6. Christianity and Anarchism · 7. Sane Conclusions.
Part 1 — “First Aid to Critics”. Shaw calls English critics ignorant: they treat Britain as “an intellectual void” and assume every idea must be a foreign import. He answers with three pairs, each naming the foreigner the critics credit and the Briton he says they ignore: disillusionment — Ibsen / Charles Lever (A Day's Ride: A Life's Romance); the female image — Schopenhauer / Ernest Belfort Bax; the illusion of religion — Nietzsche / Stuart-Glennie.
The money argument — every quotation she sets
“Our first duty, to which EVERY OTHER CONSIDERATION should be sacrificed, is NOT TO BE POOR.”(She has blanked both halves on different papers.)
“Money is the most important thing in the world. It represents HEALTH, STRENGTH, HONOR, GENEROSITY and BEAUTY.” And the want of it represents illness, weakness, disgrace, meanness and ugliness — beware the option that reverses the two.
Money becomes A CURSE only when “cheapened to worthlessness for some and made impossibly dear to others.”
“‘Poor but honest,’ ‘the respectable poor,’ and such phrases are as intolerable and as immoral as ‘drunken but amiable’ or ‘splendidly criminal.’” The form he attacks is “poor BUT [virtue]”.
Poverty is “the greatest of our evils and the worst of our crimes.”
Society offered Undershaft “not a choice between opulent villainy and humble virtue, but between ENERGETIC ENTERPRISE and COWARDLY INFAMY” — so choosing poverty would have been the cowardice.
The notion of tainted money is “an unpractical individualist superstition”. A Salvation Army officer said they would take money from the devil himself and be glad to move it into God's hands.
Refusing salvation to Bill while offering it to Bodger is DOUBLE STANDARDS.
In “Sane Conclusions” Shaw calls himself a revolutionary writer, and describes himself as an enemy of the existing social and political order, for good reasons.
Lectures 11 & 15 — Act II, the West Ham shelter
The most examined stretch of the play. Snobby Price and Rummy Mitchens eat free bread and cheerfully invent the sins they will confess. Peter Shirley, sacked for being too old, comes not for charity but asking for work. Bill Walker bursts in and strikes Jenny Hill, then spends the act trying to get rid of his guilt — first by going to Canning Town to have himself thrashed, then by throwing down a sovereign, which Barbara refuses: “We want your soul, Bill — not your money.”
The hinge of the whole play. The shelter is about to close for lack of funds. Mrs Baines arrives with Bodger's offer of £5,000; Undershaft writes the last cheque on the spot, and she accepts with joy. Bill Walker, watching the Army take the money it refused from him, asks the question the act has been building to: “Wot prahce salvyshon naow?” — what price salvation now? Barbara takes off her badge, and her cry echoes the cross: “My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Her father has won the first half of the bargain without arguing with her at all — he simply paid.
Lectures 17 & 19 — Act III, Perivale St Andrews
The family visits the arms works, and it is a shock: a clean, orderly model town with houses, a library, schools, a ballroom and chapels. The workers are well paid, well fed and well behaved. Undershaft does not preach at them — he simply removes their poverty. “You must feed the man first.”
The armourer's FAITH
“to give arms to all who offer an honest price for them, without respect of persons or principles.”
The Undershaft TRADITION
the business must pass to a foundling — which is why Stephen cannot inherit. Two separate rules; she offers them against each other.
How Cusins qualifies
a legal technicality: his father married his deceased wife's sister in Australia, a marriage England does not recognise — so Cusins is technically a foundling.
What Cusins sells his soul for
“I sell it for REALITY and POWER” — keyed variously as reality, truth and power, and both. Never wealth, never her sake.
Three one-word answers
cleanliness needs no JUSTIFICATION · it does not matter if a thing is wrong if it is TRUE · democracy will not go hand in hand with ANXIETY
Barbara's line
“Every man is a potential SCOUNDREL based on their CIRCUMSTANCES.”(She has blanked each half on a different paper.)
What Barbara actually decides — and the three famous misreadings. She does not leave Cusins (she marries him), does not make money her religion, and does not return to the Army. She goes to Perivale to preach where nobody is hungry: “I have got rid of the bribe of bread.” Salvation bought with food was never salvation. Shaw wrote part four of the preface, “Barbara's Return to the Colors”, precisely to correct those three misreadings — which is why the printed key to “At the end of the play Barbara decided to…” is NONE OF THE ABOVE.
The Seminar — two articles
The seminar block is eight True/False items worth twenty marks, answered A for True, B for False — the easiest marks on the paper if you have read the two articles once. One article is on Shaw, the other on Beckett.
The Beckett article: John Robert Keller, “A Strange Situation: self-entrapment in Waiting for Godot”, from his book The Primacy of Love. He reads the whole play through the mother–infant bond (the title echoes Mary Ainsworth's famous attachment experiment).
• Vladimir plays a maternal role and fails to contain Estragon's anxieties — he refuses to hear the dreams. Keller calls this “a maternal figure's failure to contain early anxieties.”
• He manipulates: first by insisting Estragon would be “a heap of bones” without him, then, when that fails, by becoming the sufferer himself.
• Pozzo needs Lucky as “a repository for the bad parts of himself”; the pair are codependent to the extreme — “an internal mechanics of enmeshment.”
• Lucky's tirade is “the intrapsychic consequence of ruptures in the early mother–infant dyad” — the god who loves “with some exceptions for reasons unknown” is the unavailable, arbitrary mother.
• Vladimir interrogates the boy to learn why Godot is available to him and not to Vladimir.
• And the terror of separating from the person you are entangled with is “unbearable” — which is why they never leave.

How the two plays fit together
The comparison she would want in an essay
Both plays are by Irishmen who left Ireland, and both refuse the tidy ending. But they refuse it for opposite reasons. Shaw withholds resolution because he wants you to argue — his open ending is an invitation to think and to act, exactly as the realist play “replaces the logical ending with a discussion”. Beckett withholds it because he does not believe resolution exists — his silence is the human condition itself.
Shaw's characters change: Barbara loses one faith and gains a harder one. Beckett's cannot: Vladimir ends the play exactly where he began it, one day older and one leaf richer. Shaw asks: what should we do about poverty? Beckett asks: what do we do while nothing can be done?
Where to spend your time: the moved-blank pairs first — they are the difference between a letter and a mark. Then the Godot date set (written / published / performed), then the seven parts of the preface, then the seminar True/False block (twenty marks for one reading), then the seven contradictory keys, which you cannot win but should recognise so you spend no time on them in the hall.
