★ Read this first — the shape of the whole course

Research Methodology is not a subject you can reason your way through in the exam hall. It is a subject of exact definitions, fixed orders, and two rival styles. Everything on the paper comes from one of four places: what research is; how a paper is built; how sources are credited; and how English is punctuated and formatted. The single most profitable thing you can do is learn the APA versus MLA comparison as a table you can redraw from memory — it alone accounts for roughly half the marks.

1 · Foundations — what research is الأسس: ما هو البحث

The four characteristics الخصائص الأربع

Research has four defining qualities, and the exam can ask for any one of them by its definition. Systematic: it follows a structured, organised process with clearly defined steps — defining variables, selecting participants, collecting data, analysing results. Logical: its conclusions rest on clear reasoning and evidence, never on personal opinion. Empirical: it relies on observable and measurable evidence, such as comparing students' sleep hours against their exam scores. Replicable: another researcher must be able to repeat it and verify the results — apply the same method under similar conditions and you should get similar findings.

Three ways of classifying research ثلاث طرق لتصنيف البحث

The same study can be labelled three times over, and the exam exploits that. By purpose: basic research expands theory with no immediate application (how memory works in the brain), while applied research solves a real problem (a study schedule that improves concentration). By approach: qualitative deals in meanings, experiences and perspectives using non-numerical data; quantitative deals in numbers and statistical analysis; mixed method combines the two. By objective: descriptive describes a phenomenon as it exists; analytical examines relationships and explains causes; exploratory is used when the topic is new or not clearly understood.

Research question versus hypothesis — the one distinction. A research question is open-ended and explores a topic: What factors influence students' academic performance? A hypothesis is a clear, testable prediction about a relationship between variables: Students who sleep at least seven hours perform better on exams than those who sleep less. Questions explore; hypotheses predict and can be tested.

2 · The eight steps of research خطوات البحث الثماني

★ He asks for the ORDER, not the descriptions

One exam task gives you six of these steps scrambled and asks you to sequence them. Another gives you a situation — “a researcher reads previous studies about sleep and academic performance” — and asks which step it is. Learn the sequence as a sequence.

هو يسأل عن الترتيب، لا عن الشروح. إحدى مهام الامتحان تعطيك ستّاً من هذه الخطوات مبعثرة وتطلب ترتيبها. ومهمة أخرى تعطيك موقفاً — «باحث يقرأ دراسات سابقة عن النوم والأداء الأكاديمي» — وتسأل أيّ خطوة هو. فاحفظ التسلسل بوصفه تسلسلاً.

3 · Plagiarism and copyright الانتحال وحقوق النشر

What plagiarism is ما هو الانتحال

Plagiarism is presenting another person's words or ideas as your own without proper citation. It is a serious violation of academic integrity, and universities may respond with academic probation or expulsion. Copying text without documentation is its most obvious form, but using another person's sentences, phrases, terminology, ideas, research or approach without acknowledgment is equally plagiarism. When you use someone's exact words, you must both cite them and place them inside quotation marks. When you express their ideas in your own words, you must still credit the original source.
Two typesDefinitionالنوع
IntentionalDeliberately copying another's work without citation.الانتحال المتعمَّد
UnintentionalCarelessness or ignorance of the rules — still plagiarism. Two classic cases: citing in the text but forgetting the quotation marks; and a paraphrase that stays too close to the original even with a full citation.الانتحال غير المتعمَّد
Three formsWhat it looks likeالشكل
Direct copyingWord-for-word, no quotation marks, no citation.النسخ المباشر
Poor paraphrasingChanges only a few words while keeping the structure and meaning. “Photosynthesis is the process where plants change sunlight into chemical energy” is still plagiarism.إعادة الصياغة الضعيفة
Missing citationsThe wording is entirely original but the idea is not credited. Original words do not make an idea yours.غياب التوثيق
A proper paraphrase requires four things: fully understanding the original; rewriting it completely in your own words; changing both the vocabulary and the sentence structure; and adding a citation. Change one of those and you have committed poor paraphrasing. إعادة الصياغة الصحيحة تتطلّب أربعة أمور: فهم النصّ الأصلي فهماً تامّاً؛ وإعادة كتابته كاملاً بكلماتك؛ وتغيير المفردات وتركيب الجملة معاً؛ وإضافة التوثيق. فإذا أغفلت واحداً منها وقعتَ في إعادة الصياغة الضعيفة.

⚠ Plagiarism is not copyright infringement — and the exam knows the difference

Plagiarism is an academic offence: passing off another's words or ideas as your own. It is cured by citation. Copyright infringement is a legal offence: reproducing or distributing protected work without permission — and it is not cured by citation. Copyright protects a creative work the moment it is recorded in tangible form; it does not depend on registration. Under fair use, students may use copyrighted material for education, teaching, scholarship and research provided documentation is given — but publishing the research on a website or using it commercially brings further considerations.

4 · The parts of a research paper أجزاء الورقة البحثية

★ Nine parts, in this order

1 Title page → 2 Abstract → 3 Introduction → 4 Literature review → 5 Methodology → 6 Results → 7 Discussion → 8 Conclusion → 9 Reference list / Works Cited.

And the paradox he examines: the two parts that come first — the abstract and the introduction — are the two written last.

تسعة أجزاء بهذا الترتيب: صفحة العنوان ← الملخّص ← المقدمة ← مراجعة الأدبيات ← المنهجية ← النتائج ← المناقشة ← الخاتمة ← قائمة المراجع.

والمفارقة التي يمتحن فيها: أنّ الجزأين اللذين يأتيان أولاً — الملخّص والمقدمة — هما آخر ما يُكتَب.

The title and the title page العنوان وصفحة العنوان

The title is one of the most important parts of a paper because it gives the reader the first impression of the study. A good title is clear, concise, specific and informative, reflecting the topic, the variables or the purpose. There are five kinds: descriptive (The Effects of Exercise on Mental Health), question (Does Music Help Students Concentrate Better?), compound (main title, colon, subtitle), declarative (Regular Reading Improves Vocabulary Skills), and preliminary — the temporary title written at the beginning of the research, which is not final and may change as the work develops.
The six title strategies. General subject + colon + specific phrase • General subject + prepositional phrase (no colon) • General subject + specific work • General subject + colon + type of study (A Descriptive Study, A Comparative Study) • General subject + colon + question • General subject + comparison. استراتيجيات العنوان الستّ. موضوع عام + نقطتان + عبارة محدّدة • موضوع عام + شبه جملة جارّة (بلا نقطتين) • موضوع عام + عمل محدّد • موضوع عام + نقطتان + نوع الدراسة • موضوع عام + نقطتان + سؤال • موضوع عام + مقارنة.

The title page is not numbered; numbering begins on the first page of the essay. The abstract الملخّص

An abstract is a concise summary of the paper covering the purpose, main points, methodology, findings and conclusion. It must be self-contained — understandable without reading the paper — and it runs to about 100–250 words, roughly five to seven sentences. It appears immediately after the title page but is written last. It serves three purposes: helping readers judge relevance, communicating findings to those without time to read the whole paper, and making the work findable in academic databases through indexing and keywords. In APA it is required and runs 80–120 words; in MLA it is optional and runs about 100.
A good APA abstract is five things: accurate, self-contained, concise and specific, nonevaluative (report, do not judge), and coherent and readable — using the present tense for results (the findings confirm) and the past tense for procedures (I attempted to identify). الملخّص الجيد في APA خمس صفات: دقيق، ومستقل بذاته، وموجز ومحدّد، وغير تقييمي (يَعرِض ولا يحكم)، ومترابط سهل القراءة — بصيغة المضارع للنتائج والماضي لإجراءات البحث.

Introduction, literature review, methodology المقدمة ومراجعة الأدبيات والمنهجية

The introduction moves the reader from the general topic to the specific research topic. It gives background, states the problem, the questions or hypothesis, explains the rationale and methodology briefly, highlights expected outcomes, and outlines the paper's structure — nine steps in all. Though it comes first, it is usually written last, and a good one offers a second chance to make a good first impression. The literature review is a survey of scholarly articles, books and other sources, giving a description, summary and critical evaluation of previous work, and demonstrating originality by identifying gaps. The methodology answers two questions — how was the data collected, and how was it analysed — in the past tense.

Results, discussion, conclusion النتائج والمناقشة والخاتمة

The results section reports what was found — clearly, objectively, in logical order, in the past tense — and does not interpret. It restates the problem, presents the findings, uses tables and figures where they help, and describes the key patterns and relationships. The discussion does the interpreting: why the results occurred, what they suggest, how they compare with previous research, what alternative explanations exist, what the limitations were, and what future research should pursue. The conclusion is not merely a summary: it explains why the research matters and leaves a lasting impression, restating the problem in different words, summarising the study, and discussing the implications.

⚠ The mistakes he examines as True/False

In the results: do not interpret • do not ignore negative results • be factual and concise (avoid “the results seemed better”) • do not repeat table data in the text • do not introduce new literature. In the discussion: do not repeat all the results • do not repeat recommendations in both discussion and conclusion • do not ignore contradictory findings • do not introduce new results • do not exaggerate the study's importance • avoid excessive first person. In the conclusion: do not be too lengthy • do not remain too specific • do not ignore limitations or negative results.

★ If you learn one thing from this course, learn this

APA belongs to the social sciences — psychology, education, economics, sociology, political science, linguistics — and it cares about when something was published, which is why the year appears in every citation. MLA belongs to the humanities — literature, history, philosophy — and it cares about where in the text something is, which is why the page appears in every citation. Every other difference between the two styles follows from that.

6 · Citing sources توثيق المصادر

A citation is a reference to a published or unpublished source used in writing the paper. Citing matters for four reasons: it helps readers find your sources; it shows your work is based on evidence; it increases your credibility; and it avoids plagiarism by crediting the original authors. Citing also demonstrates the breadth of your reading, and should be seen not as a burden but as a way of participating in the academic conversation.

The ampersand rule. In the reference list and in parenthetical citations, APA uses &. In narrative citations it uses the word and. MLA always uses the word and, never the ampersand. And in APA, page numbers are required only for direct quotations — use p. for one page and pp. for several. قاعدة علامة العطف. في قائمة المراجع وفي التوثيق بين الأقواس يستخدم APA الرمز &، وفي التوثيق السردي يستخدم كلمة and. أما MLA فيستخدم كلمة and دائماً ولا يستخدم الرمز أبداً. وفي APA تُطلَب أرقام الصفحات للاقتباس المباشر فقط، وتُكتَب p. لصفحة واحدة وpp. لعدّة صفحات.

7 · The reference list قائمة المراجع

The Reference List (APA) or Works Cited (MLA) sits at the end of the paper and gives the full publication details of every source cited. The formatting rules are identical in the two styles except for the heading: a new page, 1-inch margins, double spacing, continued page numbering, a centred and un-italicised title, a 0.5-inch hanging indent for every line after the first, and alphabetical order — never the order in which the works appear in the text. The title is not repeated on later pages.

★ The APA ordering rules he sets as their own questions

Same author, different years → chronological, oldest first. Same author, same year → alphabetical by title with 2013a, 2013b. A single-author entry precedes the same author with co-authors, whatever the date. Same first author, different second → alphabetical by the second author. Signed Anonymous → begin with Anonymous; no author at all → begin with the title. A shorter surname precedes a longer one that contains it (Adkins before Adkinson). If the organisation is also the publisher, write Author in place of the name. Drop Publishing, Company and Inc. from publisher names, but keep the rest in full.

The APA article rules students lose marks on. The article title is not italicised and takes sentence case; the journal title is italicised and takes Title Case; the volume is italicised; the issue is in parentheses without italics and with no space after the volume; there is no pp. before the page range; and there is no full stop after the DOI or the URL. If there is no DOI, give the URL instead. قواعد المقالة في APA التي يخسر فيها الطلاب علامات. عنوان المقالة غير مائل وبنمط الجملة؛ واسم المجلة مائل وبنمط العنوان؛ ورقم المجلد مائل؛ ورقم العدد بين قوسين بلا إمالة وبلا مسافة بعد المجلد؛ ولا تُكتَب pp. قبل الصفحات؛ ولا نقطة بعد الـDOI أو الرابط. وإن لم يوجد DOI فاذكر الرابط.

8 · Mechanics — punctuation, italics, titles الميكانيكا: الترقيم والإمالة والعناوين

Italics or quotation marks? إمالة أم علامات اقتباس؟

One question decides every case: is this a whole, independent thing, or a piece of something bigger? Whole and independent takes italics: books, plays, poems published as books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, academic journals, websites, databases, films, television series, albums, dance performances, operas, long musical compositions, works of visual art, ships, aircraft, spacecraft. A part of something larger takes quotation marks: articles, essays, short stories, poems inside collections, book chapters, web pages, single episodes, songs, lectures and speeches. In handwriting, underline instead of italicising.
Foreign words. Italicise them in an English text — but not complete foreign quotations (Julius Caesar said, “Veni, vidi, vici.”), foreign titles of short works, proper nouns, or words naturalised into English (ad hoc, cliché, etc., genre, laissez-faire, e.g., et al., concerto, hubris, raison d'être, versus). When quoting another language, reproduce every accent and special character exactly — école, pietà, tête, leçon, Fähre, año — adding them by hand if necessary. Put the translation in quotation marks, or single marks when it follows the word directly.

⚠ The Arabic-interference trap he sets deliberately

In Arabic a colon follows a verb of saying: قال الأستاذ: «العلم نور». In English it is a comma:She says, “Education is the key to success.” The colon is reserved for quotations that are grammatically independent of the introducing sentence. This appears on the paper as a True/False statement, and it is False.

فخّ التداخل مع العربية الذي يضعه عمداً. في العربية تأتي النقطتان بعد فعل القول: قال الأستاذ: «العلم نور». أما في الإنكليزية فالفاصلة:She says, “Education is the key to success.” والنقطتان محفوظتان للاقتباس المستقلّ نحوياً عن الجملة التي تقدّمه. وهذا يَرِد في الورقة عبارةً صح/خطأ، وهو خطأ.
Restrictive versus non-restrictive — one test. Can you delete it without changing who or what is meant? Yes → non-restrictive → commas: Isabel Allende, the Chilean novelist, will appear tonight. No → restrictive → no commas: The Chilean novelist Isabel Allende will appear tonight. Many writers use which for non-restrictive clauses and that for restrictive ones. المقيّد وغير المقيّد — اختبار واحد. هل يمكن حذفه دون تغيير مَن أو ما المقصود؟ نعم ← غير مقيّد ← فواصل. لا ← مقيّد ← بلا فواصل. ويفضّل كثير من الكتّاب which لغير المقيّد وthat للمقيّد.

★ Spelling and word division

Spelling and hyphenation must be consistent throughout the paper — use one reliable dictionary and take its first listed spelling. The exception: direct quotations keep the original spelling, even where the original is wrong; you do not correct inside a quotation. And avoid dividing words at the end of a line: turn off automatic hyphenation, because a hyphen may confuse a reader who cannot tell whether it belongs to the word or to the quotation.
