Overview — the shape of the novel and the course
⚠ Before anything else — how this examiner builds a paper
She takes a famous sentence from the novel and keeps the sentence while moving the blank. The line “everybody naturally despises an ungrateful nigger” has had both words removed on different years — once naturally, once ungrateful. The line “who was to blame for it… I couldn't get that out of my conscience” keys freedom on one paper while offering conscience as a decoy on another.
So learn the whole sentence, never the single word. If you know only the answer to last year's blank, this year's version will beat you.
Lecture 1 — Mark Twain, the pen name, and the age
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910) — and note that Halley's Comet appeared in both years, which is the kind of detail she likes. The family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, in 1839; Hannibal becomes the St Petersburg of the novel. He worked as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi, and it is from that trade that his pen name comes.
“MARK TWAIN” = two fathoms = TWELVE FEET — the riverman's call for water deep enough to be safe. A pseudonym is a pen name; the decoy she offers is “nickname”.

⚠ Do not swap 1865 and 1876. One ends slavery; the other brings segregation. And notice the irony that structures the whole novel: it is set in 1840, when slavery was legal, but written in the 1880s, when Jim Crow was making black Americans unfree again. Twain is writing about the past in order to attack the present.
Chapters 1–2. Huck is thirteen; Jim is in his forties. Huck has $6,000 from the treasure found in Tom Sawyer, safeguarded by Judge Thatcher. He lives with the Widow Douglas — his LEGAL GUARDIAN, not his mother and not his aunt — and her sister Miss Watson, who is Jim's owner. Tom Sawyer forms a robber gang whose oaths come out of adventure books.
Lecture 2 — Prayer, the hair-ball, and Pap's return
The two Providences. Miss Watson's Providence is a punishing one — pray and you get what you ask for, which Huck tests and finds false (he prays for fish-hooks and gets none). The Widow's Providence is kinder. Huck concludes there must be two Providences and that he would be better off with the Widow's. It is his first act of independent moral reasoning, and it prepares Chapter 31.
The hair-ball. Jim tells fortunes with an ox's hair-ball — Huck pays with a counterfeit quarter. This is the novel's first extended piece of superstition, one of its four motifs, and it is also the first time Jim is shown as a man with his own knowledge and authority, not simply as property.
Realism
Romanticism
real life, average people, characters matter more than plot — this is HUCK, who learns from experienceالحياة الواقعية، والناس العاديون، والشخصيات أهم من الحبكة — وهذا هَك، الذي يتعلّم من التجربة
adventure books, style over morality — this is TOM, who learns from booksكتب المغامرات، والأسلوب فوق الأخلاق — وهذا توم، الذي يتعلّم من الكتب
Pap returns when he hears of the money. His motives are greed, jealousy and alcoholism. A new judge tries to reform him — takes him home, gives him a clean room, weeps over him — and Pap sells his new coat for whisky that same night and falls off the porch roof. The judge concludes that a man like Pap could only be reformed with a shotgun.
Lecture 3 — The cabin, the escape, and Jackson's Island
Pap's rant is the novel's most direct piece of satire. He rages that “the law backs that old Judge Thatcher up… MY PROPERTY”, and then attacks a free, well-dressed, educated mulatto professor from Ohio who is allowed to vote — a man far above Pap in every respect, whom Pap despises solely because he is black. The speaker of any angry speech about the government, the law, or “my property” is PAP.
Huck fakes his own death — he kills a wild pig, spreads its blood, drags a sack of rocks to the river and leaves a trail, so that the town will drag the river for a body and stop looking. It works: it is the first proof that Huck, unlike Tom, plans with practical realism.
On Jackson's Island he finds Jim, who has run away because he overheard Miss Watson planning to sell him down to New Orleans for $800. They live on the island together — the first stretch of the novel in which two human beings treat each other simply as human beings. Then the floating house drifts past, and inside it a dead man shot in the back. Jim covers the face and will not let Huck look. Only at the very end of the novel do we learn that it was Pap. Jim has protected him for forty-three chapters.
Lecture 4 — The snake-skin, Sarah Williams, and the wreck
The snake-skin
Huck touches one for a joke and coils it in Jim's blanket; its mate bites Jim. It becomes the running explanation for every disaster afterwards — bad luck earned by not listening to Jim.
Huck's three aliases
SARAH WILLIAMS — dressed as a girl, in town (Ch. 11) · GEORGE JACKSON — with the Grangerfords (Ch. 18) · TOM SAWYER — at the Phelps farm (Ch. 32). ⚠ The papers only ever list two of them, which is why the key becomes “both a & b”. “Thomas Smith” is the invented distractor. And at the Phelps farm Tom pretends to be Sid.⚠ الأوراق لا تذكر إلا اثنين منها، ولهذا يصير الجواب «أ و ب معاً».
The rewards
$300 for Jim · $200 for Pap. Notice which is worth more to the town.
The wrecked steamboat
the Walter Scott — a name that is itself a joke against Romanticism. Huck finds murderers aboard and, having taken their boat, feels sorry for them and tries to get them rescued. It is the novel's first act of empathy — extended to murderers, before it is ever extended to Jim.
Lecture 5 — The fog, the apology, and Cairo المحاضرة ٥: الضباب والاعتذار والقاهرة★ five exam lines live here
Huck and Jim are separated in fog. When Huck finds the raft again he tries to convince Jim that the whole thing was a dream and that Jim dreamt it. Jim believes him, interprets the dream elaborately — and then sees the leaves and rubbish on the raft, and understands he has been mocked. His reply is the moral turning point of the first half of the novel: “Dat truck dah is TRASH; en trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey fren's en makes 'em ashamed.”
The apology.“It was FIFTEEN MINUTES before I could work myself up to go and HUMBLE myself to a nigger — but I done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.” Both the number and the verb have been blanked on papers. It is the first time in American literature that a white character apologises to a black one.
The conscience crisis at Cairo. Cairo, Illinois, is where the Ohio meets the Mississippi — the point at which Jim can turn up the Ohio into the free states. As they approach it Jim becomes “all over trembly and feverish to be so close to FREEDOM”, and Huck's conscience turns on him. He sets off in the canoe intending to turn Jim in — and two slave-hunters ask him whether the man on his raft is black or white. Huck says white, invents a family with smallpox, and they give him $40 in gold and flee.
The two lines she sets from this moment: “He was most FREE — and who was to blame for it? Why, ME. I couldn't get that out of my CONSCIENCE.” — note that both “free” and “conscience” have been used as the blank, with the other offered as the decoy. “I warn't MAN ENOUGH” — to tell on Jim. Huck reads his own decency as weakness, and that inversion is the engine of the whole novel: his conscience is society's, and it is wrong; his heart is his own, and it is right.
Lecture 6 — The feud, and the arrival of the frauds
A steamboat smashes the raft and Huck is taken in by the Grangerfords, who are locked in a thirty-year feud with the Shepherdsons. A feud is inherited family killing whose original cause has been forgotten — nobody can remember what it was about. The families carry guns to church and listen to a sermon on brotherly love, which they all agree was a good sermon.
The feud ends when Sophia Grangerford elopes with Harney Shepherdson, setting off the final gunfight. Buck Grangerford — a boy Huck's own age — is shot dead. Huck covers his face, and the handout notes he does not tell us what he felt, “because it would make me sick”. This is the novel's clearest statement that “civilized” society is more savage than anything on the river. ⚠ Two Bucks.Buck GRANGERFORD = the boy killed in the feud. Buck HARKNESS = the “half-a-man” who leads the mob at Sherburn's. Do not confuse them.
Back on the river, two con men climb aboard: the Duke (claiming to be the Duke of Bridgewater) and the Dauphin or King (claiming to be the lost heir to the French throne). Huck sees through them at once but says nothing, because “the best way to get along with his kind of people is to let them have their own way.” They are primarily con men, not actors — read the word “primarily” if she offers actors as an option.
Lecture 7 — the Doctor's File المحاضرة ٧: ملفّ الدكتورة★ 81 questions · Paper B opens with two sentences from it
This lecture is not part of the story — it is the answer key to the whole course
Lecture 7 is the Doctor's own compiled file on characters, themes, motifs, symbols, genre, style and allusions. It supplies more exam questions than any other lecture, and Paper B's first two questions are sentences lifted straight out of it. If you learn one lecture, learn this one.

The six themes, from her file:
• Racism and slavery — the abstract antagonist of the whole novel
• Intellectual and moral education — the bildungsroman
• The hypocrisy of “civilized” society — keyed as “most central” on Paper B
• Guilt and shame — broken in Chapter 31, when he cannot pray
• Empathy — first for the murderers on the wreck, then for Jim
• Money and wealth — “does nothing but cause problems”
Motifs: childhood · lies and cons · superstition · parody of romance novels. Symbols: the Mississippi · the raft · Jim himself.
A nuance for interpretation questions only. Lecture 7 adds that the river later becomes “merely a short-term means of escape”, carrying them deeper south — deeper into slavery, not away from it. Use that in an essay-style item. But on a one-word MCQ, the river means FREEDOM.

Lecture 8 — The camp meeting, Sherburn, and the Wilks swindle
The camp meeting
the King tells a weeping crowd he is a reformed pirate from the Indian Ocean and will return to convert his old shipmates. They give him money. Satire on religious emotion as a substitute for religious thought.
Boggs & Sherburn
Boggs, a harmless drunk, insults Colonel Sherburn in the street. Sherburn shoots him dead in front of his daughter. The town forms a lynch mob led by Buck Harkness — and Sherburn faces them alone from his porch roof with the speech the papers quote: “The average man's a coward”, and the mob has come in the dark, masked, “Southern fashion” — which means lynching. The mob disperses. Sherburn is right about them, and he is still a murderer — that is the point.
Jim and Elizabeth
Jim tells Huck about the time he struck his four-year-old daughter Elizabeth for disobeying him — and then discovered she had gone deaf from scarlet fever and had not heard him. “Oh, de po' little thing! De Lord God Almighty forgive po' ole Jim, kaze he never gwyne to forgive hisself.”This is the scene that makes Jim fully human, and it comes shortly before Huck's decision. He also has a son, Johnny.
The Wilks swindle. The frauds impersonate the English brothers of the dead Peter Wilks in order to steal the $6,000 inheritance from his three orphaned nieces. Huck hides the gold in the coffin — note the trap: she offers “steal the coffin”, which is wrong. Mary Jane Wilks, the eldest, hands the whole sum over to the frauds out of trust; Huck, ashamed, tells her the truth. His verdict on the funeral: “It was enough to make a body ASHAMED of the human race.”
Lecture 9 — THE CLIMAX المحاضرة ٩: الذروة★ the most quoted page in the course
The King sells Jim for $40 to the Phelps family. Huck, alone, decides to do the “right” thing and write to Miss Watson telling her where her slave is. He writes the letter and feels “washed clean of sin for the first time”. Then he tries to pray — and cannot.
“You can't pray a lie — I found that out.” He cannot pray because he does not actually intend to give Jim up. Then he remembers the journey: Jim on watch letting him sleep, Jim calling him “de ole true Huck; de on'y white genlman dat ever kep' his promise to ole Jim.” He looks at the letter, and says:
“All right, then, I'll go to hell” — and tears it up.
This is the moral climax of American literature. Huck believes, sincerely and completely, that helping Jim will damn him eternally — and he chooses it anyway. He is not rejecting morality; he is rejecting society's morality in favour of his own heart, while still believing society is right and he is wicked. “I was a-trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it.”
Two further lines from this lecture, both set: “everybody naturally despises an UNGRATEFUL nigger” — the sentence whose other word, naturally, has also been blanked; and “I was playing double… the biggest sin of all”, where the sin is helping Jim. And the line that sums Huck's whole development: “I knowed he was WHITE inside” — “he” being Jim. Note that this is praise offered in the only language Huck has, and the novel knows it.
Lecture 10 — The evasion, and the ending
At the Phelps farm Huck is mistaken for Tom Sawyer — the Phelpses are Tom's uncle and aunt, Silas and Sally, and they are the only intact family in the novel. Tom himself arrives and pretends to be his brother Sid. And then Tom takes over.
“The evasion” is the long, deliberately painful final section in which Tom, purely for the sake of adventure, turns a simple rescue into an elaborate romantic escape: rope ladders in pies, a shirt written on in blood, rats, snakes and spiders in Jim's shed, an anonymous warning letter. And Tom knows the whole time that Jim is already free.«التملّص» هو القسم الأخير الطويل المؤلم عمداً، حيث يحوّل توم، لمجرّد المغامرة، عملية إنقاذٍ بسيطة إلى هربٍ رومانسيّ معقّد: سلالم حبال في الفطائر، وقميصٌ يُكتب عليه بالدم، وجرذان وأفاعٍ وعناكب في سقيفة جِم، ورسالة تحذيرٍ مجهولة.
Miss Watson freed Jim in her will, having died two months earlier and repented of ever meaning to sell him. Tom has kept this to himself so that the adventure could run its course. When Tom is shot in the leg during the escape, Jim gives up his own freedom and stays to help the doctor nurse him — which is why the doctor tells the town Jim is “worth a thousand dollars” and should not be harmed.
⚠ The two facts the papers love here: Jim had been free for two months without knowing it, and Tom pays Jim $40 at the end — the same sum the King sold him for. Aunt Polly, who is Tom's aunt and Aunt Sally's sister, arrives and identifies everyone. And the last line: “I reckon I got to light out for the Territory ahead of the rest” — the West, because Aunt Sally wants to adopt and “sivilize” him, “and I can't stand it. I been there before.”⚠ الحقيقتان اللتان تحبّهما الأوراق هنا: أن جِم كان حراً شهرين دون أن يدري، وأن توم يدفع لجِم أربعين دولاراً في النهاية — وهو المبلغ نفسه الذي باعه به «الملك».
⚠ The ending is the most debated page in American literature
Many critics hold that Twain ruins his own book in the last eleven chapters: Huck, who has just risked damnation for Jim, hands authority back to Tom and becomes a follower again; and Jim, who has been a full man since Chapter 15, is reduced to a prop in a boy's game. Others argue the cruelty is the point — that Tom's “evasion” is a deliberate re-enactment of how American society treated freed slaves after 1865: technically free, and still humiliated for sport. If an essay question comes, that second reading is the one to argue.

The sentence that holds the novel together
The novel is built on a single reversal: Huck's conscience is society's, and it is wrong; Huck's heart is his own, and it is right. Every time he does something decent, he believes he is sinning. He apologises to Jim and calls it humbling himself. He refuses to turn Jim in and calls himself not man enough. He tears up the letter and believes he is choosing hell. The reader sees clearly what Huck cannot: that a society which teaches a thirteen-year-old that kindness is damnation has already condemned itself. That gap between what Huck says and what we understand is dramatic irony, and it is the engine of the entire book.
Where to spend your time:Lecture 7 first — it is the Doctor's own file and supplies more questions than any other. Then Lecture 9, the climax, whose page is the most quoted in the course. Then the quotation list with the exact missing words, then the numbers and dates, then the relationship map. And remember the method: she keeps the sentence and moves the blank — so learn whole sentences, not single answers.
